Dear Parents,

“The three great essentials to achieve anything worthwhile are, first, hard work; second, stick-to-itiveness; third, common sense.” Thomas A. Edison

“When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look at the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.” Helen Keller

We are embarking on the year 2012 – and the quotes above expound on what I am feeling for this year. Let’s quit looking at these closed state economic doors - that are bleak at best. The revenues available to school districts are at the depth of despair, and families are unemployed…! For a moment, let’s peer instead at an open door… Over the holidays, I witness families that looked deep into their torn raggedy purses and brought forth a “widow’s mite” and gave into our community’s needs. I saw families give toys and food for the donated ‘Toy and Food Drive’ not knowing that they would be receiving a basket from such said drive. Unbelievable, unconditional loving charitable hands and hearts abound abundantly in our rural community! As Thomas A. Edison quote states above, “…achieving anything worthwhile are– hard work, stick-to-itiveness, and common sense.” Is this not our community? Please let us not just stand and look at the closed door but let us look at the new one that is opening, as Helen Keller stated. We will make it through this tough time because we have each other! Thank you for every one of you that extended your hands and your hearts!

PTC – What on earth can I say about this incredible group of individual ladies and gentlemen that poured into our district their most valued commodities – time and unconditional love! Sarah Wilder, Shelley Green, Lisa Woolley, Breanna Woolley, Tracie Taylor, Pamela Beam, Shannon Comer, Leticia Medley, Amanda Barrett, Maria Thomas, Angela Schallock, Kimberly Whitaker, Danny Bonas, Santa Claus, and multiple community elves that made our Santa’s Secret Shop, baked goods for 6th graders, donated Christmas tree and baskets a huge success! Thank you Madame President and all your hard working team!

Thank you Teachers and Staff for all the extra hours you invest into our students. You each demonstrate always hard work, stick-to-itiveness and common sense! You are always reliable and you have a heart to help our students succeed and move forward toward the ‘open door’.

We have an exercise class being offered at Piute Mountain School – Tuesdays and Thursdays. The classes start at 4 pm and last one hour. We are becoming toned up and more flexible in our joints. We have lots of fun as we encourage each other to continue on and not miss a class. Thank you, Chris Casteel for instructing us in our exercise classes, ‘No pain, No gain!’

Volunteer Thank yous – Thank you Mr. Varga for helping out with our district’s plumbing needs. Thank you to everyone that sent in toys, canned and dried goods for our ‘Toy and Food Drive’. The boxes were delivered to our community food basket distributors and baskets went out to encourage and enrich families’ lives. Thank you!  I want to thank everyone for sending in supplies and Box Tops for Schools. Thank you, Ron and Linda who donated whiteboards and recycled goods for our districts to use. Thank you, Jackie Hammitt for your monthly donation for Camp KEEP scholarships. Thank you, Ceisliks for the donated books that you delivered to our school. Educational Foundation, thank you for purchasing, Read Naturally Live for our Response to Intervention program. This reading program will help improve and enrich 30 struggling students skills. Thank you! Thank you, Board Members for your continuous dedication to our district; Mrs. Cardon, Mr. Huey, Mr. Rankin, Mr. Nobles, and Mr. Jones.  Thank you Vons for letting us reap the benefit of bread donations.

Special but not always pleasant information, Lice! It has been brought to my attention that my parents want to know about these ‘friends’ that seem to show up uninvited. I found a brochure by the makers of Quit Nits that gave information to families on how to look for and how to treat lice and nits. Quit Nits brochure claims, Please follow these steps to prevent head lice infestations:
Check children’s heads for signs of lice and/or nits. Detecting lice is easy:
• Closely examine your child’s hair and scalp. Look for white or grayish crawling forms, about the size of a sesame seed with six legs (lice), and yellowish-white eggs (nits) attached to hair shafts close to the scalp.
• Tell your children to avoid head-to-head contact and any sharing of combs, brushes, towels, hats, scarves, barrettes, or other personal items commonly worn on the head.
• Wash your hands and children’s hands and nails thoroughly, getting under the nails as some lice may be found there.
In case of infestation, please follow these steps:
• Notify the school so that he/she can help limit the spread of lice.
• Treat your child immediately.
Common myths about head lice
Myth – Head lice are caused by poor hygiene.
Fact – The presence of head lice does not indicate a lack of hygiene. A person can have good personal hygiene and still get lice. Head lice are mainly acquired through direct head-to-head contact with a person who is infested, but may occasionally be acquired from contact with clothing (such as hats, scarves, and coats) or other personal items(such as brushes or towels).
Myth – Lice can jump or fly from person to person
Fact – Though lice are highly contagious, they cannot jump or fly.
Myth – Dogs or other pets can spread head lice
Fact – People cannot catch head lice from pets. Lice are h7man parasites and require human blood to survive.
For more information from Quit Nits you may contact them at; @quitnits.us. This treatment is a natural brand made from Quassia wood.

*Remember to use KCSOS web page at http:/kern.org to check if school is delayed or cancelled. Directions for accessing the web site: go to http://kern.org and on the right hand side above the blue bar that states, ‘The Upcoming Events’ click on ‘Alert Line’ and it will have the district’s closures posted. Please check the ‘Alert Line’ between 5 - 6 AM. I also talked with some of the media about not posting the closures on the morning news channels. They promised to find out where the break down in the process had happened. Again, thank you, for your patience. It was an intense time!
Special note: We will continue to call each parent when emergencies or closures occur, but now you have other venues to use in emergency situations. Make sure the district has back up emergency numbers and please keep the numbers up to date! Winter is approaching!
