School HistoryCaliente School was organized in Caliente on June 1, 1875. At the time the school was established, Caliente was a bustling mining, cattle and railroad town. The population was more than 3,000, but this population boom would only last until December. This first school was north of the store. Caliente's main street had more than 20 saloons, 4 general stores, 3 barbershops and blacksmiths, 3 hotels, and numerous other shops. But, as the railroad moved on toward Tehachapi, the residents began making a mass exodus. Stores and saloons were torn down. In the summer of 1885, a flash flood swept the school away. The district built a new school at the east end of town on high ground. From 1885 to 1950 the new schoolhouse educated around 14 students. A new school was built and opened in the Fall of 1951 with an enrollment of 77 students. By the 1961 school year, the enrollment had dropped to 35 students. School News...
